Below the Surface: The Words That Never Settled |

Fragments I Never Published
Five pieces of work, doubt, and the things I almost didn't do.
The raw story behind the art, the career that broke open, the politics I wrestled with - and how insecurity nearly kept all of it hidden.
Free. Five pieces. A closer look at the work and the ideas behind it.
When you look at a piece of ENJZ work, you see the artwork. The Arabic calligraphy. The verse on archival paper.Much of what built it sits behind what you see.Twenty years in military operations, peacekeeping, and humanitarian work. A career that ended without warning. Three months of silence. A notebook full of poems nobody had ever read. I began to see that what I had folded away since childhood had never really left me.These are some of the things that live beneath the surface. The crossroads. The reinvention myth I stopped believing in. Where inspiration actually comes from. The politics question I kept dodging. And the fear that had nothing to do with failure.
Five messages. Five fragments. Never published before now.
What arrives in your inbox
One email per week for five weeks. Each one a fragment I've never shared publicly - the thinking underneath the work.
Week 1 - The career that broke open into this one
I learned that there is rarely a perfect decision at a crossroads. Waiting for certainty did not make the choice easier. This is what twenty years in conflict environments and a collapsed career actually taught me about transitions.Week 2 - Why reinvention never worked for me
Sometimes you don't need to become someone new. Sometimes the thing you've been looking for was inside you the whole time, waiting to be finished.Week 3 - Inspiration isn't a feeling
It's what happens when you follow a thought beyond the short bursts of attention that have become normal online. For me, the questions have often been more useful than the answers.Week 4 - The question I kept dodging
Do I go into politics or not? And the harder question underneath it: if I have an opinion and keep my art from expressing it because I am afraid of the backlash, what am I protecting?Week 5 - The fear that has nothing to do with failure
I think about throwing in the towel every single day. The fear isn't failure. It's contributing to work that does not meet the standard I have set for myself.
This is for you if
- You've stood at a crossroads and waited for the right decision to reveal itself
- You've been told to reinvent yourself and felt something was off about that advice
- You make things - or want to - and you're not sure what keeps stopping you
- You carry opinions you haven't said out loud yet
- You've felt the pull between who the world expects you to be and who you actually are
- You want to understand what lives beneath the surface of work that means something
